If your business produces waste, Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) does not give you a separate start date, but it does make your duty of care more visible. Here is what to know.
Your duty
Your duty of care is unchanged in principle: accurate descriptions, correct EWC codes and quantities. The difference under DWT is that a wrong description now shows up in a connected digital record, so duty of care failures are easier to spot than they were on paper.
The early pressure
From October 2026 the receiving sites that take your waste, and the carriers who move it, will expect clean digital data. So even without a deadline of your own, expect to be asked for descriptions and codes in a digital form.
What to do now
Get your EWC codes and waste descriptions accurate
Check that your carriers are registered and compliant
Expect to provide data digitally rather than on paper transfer notes
