The Receiving Site Finder puts the Environment Agency's register of permitted waste sites in England on a map. Landfills, transfer stations, materials recycling facilities, composting sites, metal recyclers and the rest, with the permit each one holds and, where the register says so, the waste codes it is permitted to take.
You use it when a load turns up that your usual tip will not take, or when you are quoting work in a part of the country you do not normally run to and need to know what the tipping is going to cost you in miles.
How to do it
In the sidebar, under Tools, click Receiving Site Finder.
Search by postcode, site name or permit number. If you have let the browser share your location, the list opens on the sites nearest you first.
Filter by the type of site you need, for example A15 Materials Recycling Facility for mixed builders waste, or A02 Landfill (Special Waste) for something hazardous. There is a permit status filter next to it, so you can hide anything revoked, expired or suspended.
Switch between List and Map with the toggle at the top right. Pins are placed by postcode, so treat one as the right yard rather than the right gate.
Open a site to see its EA register record: permit number, permit holder, site type, whether the permit is bespoke or standard rules, and when the register was last read. Underneath is Permitted waste (EWC), the codes that permit actually covers, with a plain-English description on each and hazardous ones marked.
Add the ones you use to your own receiving sites, from the "..." menu on the row, so they are there next time without searching.
Worth knowing
A site being on the list means it holds a permit, not that it will take your load today or at a price you like. Ring them.
Check the permitted waste list covers the code you are actually carrying, not just something similar. That is your responsibility as the carrier, not theirs.
The register is read afresh every night, so a permit that was renewed, suspended or surrendered shows the change the next morning rather than months later.
This is the Environment Agency's register, so it covers England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland keep their own, and those are not in here.
